Dings happen. You could take your board to the surf shop for a repair but knowing how to fix it yourself is a good skill to have. YETI Ambassador and Pro Surfer, Keith Malloy, shows us how to repair a surfboard ding.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

For a polyester resin board

*If your board is epoxy resin, make sure you have the right materials.

Resin

Catalyst

Q-cell thickener

Sandpaper - fine and rough

Sanding block

Fiberglass

Blue Painter’s Tape

Stirring sticks and mixing cups

Scissors

Xacto knife

Plastic gloves

Steps
1 Make sure the ding is completely dry.
2 Clean out broken fiberglass.
3 Rough up the area with heavier grit sandpaper.
4 Create a perimeter around your working area with painter’s tape.
5 Mix Q-cell and resin. Aim for a petroleum jelly texture. Don’t add hardener until you’ve got it where you want it.
6 Start filling the holes. Better to put on extra and sand if off than not have enough.
7 Let it harden. But before it completely dries, do a rough sand to take a little off, trying to get it flush with the board.
8 Cut a circular patch of fiberglass large enough to completely cover the ding and surrounding area.
9 Add resin mixture to adhere the fiber glass to the board.
10 With a plastic glove on, use your finger to saturate all the glass.
11 Wait for it all to harden.
12 Use a sanding block to sand it all down.
13 Give your board a smooth finish, use fine grit sandpaper with some water.
