The moment one of the local neighborhood kids brought around his new skateboard was the moment Samarria Brevard’s path shifted. A natural on a board, Samarria chased the challenge skateboarding offered her, winning her first contest, The Supergirl Am-Jam, at just 17 years old. From there, a string of placements at various events led her to the 2017 X Games where she placed second, becoming the first-ever Black woman to medal at that event. She also earned a spot on the USA Olympic skateboarding team and on the cover of Thrasher magazine, two notable achievements in the skating world. And while all of her achievements have undoubtedly formed a successful career, she’s also been instrumental in paving the way for other female skaters. With more women on podiums and skate magazine covers, Samarria is a force in the shift to make skateboarding more inclusive for everyone.
