Spey casting is one of the most popular fly fishing techniques for casting effortless, yet powerful casts. Spey casting allows you to cover a lot of water efficiently with no back cast, which is good if you’re up against a wall. Justin Miller shows us how easy and effective it is.
Three Parts to Spey Casting:
1
Anchor point
Where the fly gets stuck to the water and locks the line to the water.
Everything else, the rest of the cast, pivots around that anchor point.
2
D-Loop
Performing this creates the letter “D” behind you. Forming the D-loop loads the rod and gets the line in plane with your target.
3
Forward Cast
Just like every cast, it’s just a straight line to the target with a nice crisp stop to form a loop.
