Best Ways to Keep Coffee Hot
Piping hot coffee when you’re far from home — or civilization at all — on a cold day is a particular kind of comfort that makes all the difference in your day. While insulated drinkware, especially YETI coffee tumblers, mugs, and jugs, can keep steaming hot beverages exceptionally hot for longer than you expect, there are many variables in play that can affect heat retention.

But if you apply the following steps, there’s good reason to believe hot coffee is still in the cards as the sun is setting.

1. Use a Double-Wall Vacuum Insulated Bottle

The best way to keep coffee hot for hours is a double-wall vacuum-insulated bottle, like a YETI Rambler® Bottle with a lid that seals tightly.

While our Rambler® Tumblers are great for keeping coffee hot for a couple hours, a bottle that completely closes will help prevent heat from escaping from the top.

  • Double-wall insulation helps prevent heat loss
  • Insulation also helps to prevent external cold from cooling your drink
  • Leakproof lids keep air out and heat in

Best YETI For the Job:

Rambler® 18 oz or 26 oz Bottle with HotShot Cap

Why?

The HotShot Cap lets you sip from any side while keeping coffee sealed tight between drinks.

2. Preheat Your Bottle

Before pouring in your coffee, preheat your Rambler® Bottle using boiling water. Let the bottle sit for 1–2 minutes with the boiling water inside (no need to cap it). This helps the vessel itself warm up, so you aren’t sacrificing the coffee’s heat if you pour it into a cold or room-temp bottle.

Three simple steps to preheat your bottle:

  1. Heat water and pour it into your Rambler® Bottle
  2. (Do not use to store boiling contents or with contents above 185°F/85°C.)
  3. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then pour it out.
  4. Fill the pre-heated bottle with your freshly brewed, hot coffee.

Works Best With: Rambler® Bottles. While this concept applies to tumblers, using a bottle with a lid that completely seals will retain heat longer, especially when pre-warmed.

3. Limit Open Air Exposure

Every time you open your lid, heat escapes. If you enjoy sipping slowly throughout the morning, choose a leakproof cap that seals completely between drinks, like our HotShotTM Cap or opt for the Cup Cap Accessory so you can easily portion out your hot coffee into the 5 oz. Cup.

Best Caps For Heat Retention:

HotShot® Cap or Cup Cap

  • HotShot Cap (Best for Bottles) – Locks tight, helps to prevent heat loss, sip from any side.
  • Cup Cap Accessory — Turn your Rambler® Bottle into a convenient bottle and cup set with a cap that lets you pour without exposing the bottle contents to cool air.

4. Choose the Right Size

Filling the bottle or jug all the way will help minimize air exposure that will cool the hot coffee contents. If you know you’ll want about two cups of coffee, choose a Rambler® 18 oz. Bottle. If you are bringing enough coffee for a group, choose a Rambler® 64 oz. Bottle, or even a Rambler® half-gallon or gallon jug. In addition, larger volumes of hot liquid will stay hot longer than smaller amounts.

Best YETI For Maximum Heat Retention:

Rambler® 46 oz Bottle

  • The Rambler® 46 oz. Bottle is the sweet spot in volume for plenty of coffee, offering 2 people about 2+ cups each, with the volume of coffee contributing to less heat loss inside the bottle.
